São Tomé, 7 October 2026 (STP-Press) – The MLSTP representative, Cilcio Santos, said that the president of the party, Américo Barros, expected to be appointed new Prime Minister, “respecting the will of the people”, following the publication on Tuesday of the final results of the 27 September parliamentary elections by the Constitutional Court.
“What we humbly hope is that […] the President of the Republic appoints the President of the MLSTP Prime Minister, thus respecting the will of the people, party winner of the elections,” said Cilcio Santos shortly after the announcement of the results by the Constitutional Court, which confirmed the victory of the MLSTP in the parliamentary elections with 24 deputies, followed by the ADI with 23, MCI-PUN with six and Basta with two.
” We will discuss with all the parties that have held official positions,” said Cilcio Santos, adding that “we have started several contacts since the release of the provisional results” .
The MLSTP representative said: “One thing at a time … we want to ensure parliamentary viability, but if we do not succeed, we want to form the government. »
The MLSTP representative’s statements only took place a few days after the President of the Republic, Carlos Vila Nova, stated in an interview with RFI that he would invite the party that won the parliamentary elections and would ask for the continuity of the parliament before appointing the next government as a guarantee of political stability in the country.
